Mass extinction events

In a landmark paper published in 1982, Jack Sepkoski and David M. Raup identified five mass extinction events. There is still debate about the causes of these extinctions, but possible causes usually include sea level and climate fluctuations, impact events, and volcanism. Research completed since then has concluded that a sixth mass extinction event is ongoing.
